Digital accessibility considered from the very first prototype

For several years now, WS Interactive has been partnering withthe Camille Miret Institute, a long-standing leader in mental health and disability services in Occitanie. With 37 facilities, more than 600 beds, and nearly 1,000 professionals who have been dedicated to the same mission since 1875: working together with each person in their care to develop a care plan based on respect, a welcoming environment, and solidarity.

This isn’t the first time we’ve worked with the Camille Miret Institute: we had previously assisted with an initial redesign of its website, focused on its brand identity and digital strategy. We won’t go into detail about that project here. This time, our collaboration is taking on a whole new dimension: a overhaul designed withdigital accessibility in mind—an issue the Institute could not afford to treat superficially. Every aspect of the design and user experience has been reimagined with this priority at the heart of the project.

As a public institution, the Camille Miret Institute is subject to a legal obligation to ensure the accessibility of its digital services, pursuant to the RGAA (General Framework for Improving Accessibility). This obligation takes on its full meaning when considered in light of the Institute’s core mission: to ensure that everyone, regardless of their disability, has simple and independent access to information about their care journey.

An Approach: Accessibility as a Foundation, Not an Option

All too often, accessibility is addressed at the end of a project, as a layer of fixes applied after the fact. We’ve taken the opposite approach: we integrate it right from the first stage of design.

Color palette to meet RGAA requirements
  • AccessibleUX/UI design from the start: user flows, contrast, keyboard navigation, and semantic structure are all considered even before the first screen is designed.
  • RGAA/WCAG-compliant mockups: Each page delivered to the development teams incorporates the required accessibility criteria (heading structure, text alternatives, focus handling, forms) to avoid back-and-forth communication and regression issues.
  • RGAA-compliant development: a website built to meet the criteria of the General Framework for Improving Accessibility (RGAA ) across all templates and features.

Consulting services followed by an internal control audit

At WS Interactive, we support our clients throughout theaccessibility auditto accurately assess the website’s level of compliance. Once development is complete, we conduct a follow-up audit to verify that the technical requirements have been properly implemented and to correct any compliance issues before the accessibility statement is published.

The result: a 95% RGAA compliance rate . This is an exceptionally high level for an institutional website of this scale, placing the Institute’s accessibility statement among the most comprehensive in the public health and medical-social sector, with a clear path toward full compliance.

What this project actually changes

For the Camille Miret Institute, this is a website that its users, caregivers, and professionals can access and use regardless of their circumstances —whether they use only a keyboard, a screen reader, a magnifier, or have cognitive or visual impairments. It also ensures compliance with regulatory obligations and provides the ability to demonstrate this compliance through an independent audit.

For WS Interactive, this project is part of a broader effort to support public sector entities and the healthcare sector with their digital accessibility challenges—expertise that we also make available to other healthcare and medical-social care facilities in their efforts to achieve RGAA compliance.

WS is proud to have partnered with the Camille Miret Institute on this challenging project. And because accessibility is a long-term commitment, this is just one more step in an ongoing collaboration.

FAQ

What is the RGAA?

The RGAA (General Framework for Improving Accessibility) is the framework that defines, in France, the technical rules ensuring that a website is accessible to people with disabilities. It is based on the international WCAG standards.

Is digital accessibility mandatory for public institutions?

Yes. Government agencies, local governments, and public institutions—including healthcare facilities—have a legal obligation to make their websites and digital services accessible and to publish an accessibility statement indicating their RGAA compliance rate.

How does WS Interactive ensure the reliability of its accessibility audit?

WS Interactive conducts its RGAA audits in-house, using teams trained in the standard’s methodology. We support our clients throughout the audit process and then conduct a follow-up audit to verify that the development has been implemented correctly and to correct any compliance issues before the accessibility statement is published.

Can WS Interactive assist with a response to a public request for proposals that includes a digital accessibility clause?

Yes. WS Interactive designs its projects with accessibility in mind from the prototyping phase (UX/UI) through development, and assists its public-sector clients in compiling the RGAA compliance documentation required to meet their regulatory obligations.
